   FYI, Peter Gutmann's paper -- referenced in a previous post --
includes a detailed discussion of degaussing as a method of erasing
diskettes and other removable media, magnetic tapes, and hard drives.
(See the section "4. Other Methods of Erasing Magnetic Media.")
