For those interested in looking at these issues in more depth, the
Internet Architecture Board (IAB)'s objections to VeriSign's new
practices are outlined in a January 25, 2003 letter to ICANN's Stuart
Lynn at:

   http://www.icann.org/correspondence/iab-message-to-lynn-25jan03.htm

And here is VeriSign's response two weeks later:

   http://www.verisign.com/nds/naming/idn/response.html

Interestingly, in addition to a possible desire to act as a
"typo-squatter," as Mike Hunter characterizes it, VeriSign appears to
have instituted these practices as an early means of supporting
internationalized domain names.
