Craig -
Allen Chang's note last night almost provoked a response, and this one
finally did it! ;)
The assumption that every machine connected to the campus network is under
the control of a sysadmin is false.
Change "resident" to "faculty, staff, and student", and his points apply to
many other parts of the campus.
>1) We have no control over the residents' computers
>2) We often have no reliable method of reaching the residents [or getting
>into offices and labs] [or knowing the admin password even if we can]
>3) The residents can't be relied upon to patch their computers
People out in the departments are clamoring for blocking because they see
the enormity of the task of keeping our
network secure. I'm sure SNS does understand this, but my (former)
colleagues "in the trenches" are really pressed on this issue.
(one data point on the staffing situation - I retired as the only official
computer support person for a department with 60 faculty FTE and
over 200 grad students. Due to the budget, my position was not refilled...)
