Some changes are in the works for the campus dial-up modem services in
the coming year. Due to reduced funding for the University, the
dial-up service on the Shared High Speed Service (510-848-5298) and
Lucent Test Modems (510-647-5117) will no longer be free. In early
2003, IST-CNS will start charging a small fee ($20 per year) to use
these modem services, as announced by Jack McCredie, CIO, in the
Nov-Dec 2002 "Berkeley Computing and Communications".
The Subscription Home IP Service (SHIPS) will continue at $12/month.
SHIPS offers a no-busy-signal service with sessions lasting up to 8
hours. The two low-cost (formerly free) services have 2-hour session
limits, and are often busy during peak hours.
Billing details are still being worked out. All current Home IP users
will be given the opportunity to cancel, sign-up for the low-cost
service, or upgrade to SHIPS. Watch for further announcements on
campus mailing lists and CNS web sites.
