Greetings,
A pre-pilot test of secure SSL access to UCLink email, called SecureLink,
is now available for customer use.
Your UCLink e-mail user name and password and the contents of your e-mail
messages are transmitted through a secure, encrypted channel between your
computer and UCLink using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This is a major
improvement to email privacy and integrity. Wireless networking users
should take particular note, but there is also a significant privacy and
integrity improvement for customers using UCLink through ISPs, and even
for on-campus network and campus dial up customers.
An alternative to SecureLink is BearMail which also uses SSL to access
your email but over the Web ("https://bearmail.berkeley.edu/").
We have tested SecureLink with Windows and Macintosh Eudora, and Microsoft
Outlook. Other SSL-capable email clients such as Netscape and PC-Pine
should also work.
Some of you are already using SecureLink (started August 2002) or the
earlier test on Software (running since Fall 2001).
For more information and setup details see

(see the above web link for how to subscribe).
