You may have noticed a recent upsurge in 'spam' (unsolicited
commercial e-mail) postings to the Micronet user group mailing list.

The most flagrant recent incident was a set of 12 spam messages,
most of them sexually- and gambling-oriented, which were sent in
rapid-fire succession to the list address during an 18-minute period
on Saturday evening, October 26.

As a result, I've made the decision to "close" the Micronet mailing
list this Monday, October 28, at 12:00 noon. After that time, only
messages sent to the Micronet mailing list address by subscribers to
that list will be 'broadcast' to the list's members. Messages sent
to the list address by non-subscribers will be blocked.

This may cause some inconvenience for list members and others, and
is a step not being taken lightly. I'll send a follow-up message on
Monday with more details about how the "closed" list will work.

P.S. Last Thursday, I sent mail to the 'abuse' address at a
Minnesota-based company offering cable TV, telephone, and broadband
Internet service ("Astound by Seren Innovations") in the St. Cloud,
MN and Concord, CA areas, regarding an e-mail message that was
ostensibly sent by a subscriber to that service 'from' the Micronet
list address (!), and which may have also been sent or copied to
several Usenet newsgroups.

We found out about this only because one message using that forged
From: address inadvertently bounced to the Micronet list
administrator's address. My suspicion is that there is at least some
likelihood that this message -- or possibly a predecessor message
that was being replied to -- led to the spate of 'spam' postings to
the list address on Saturday.
