UC Berkeley's master agreement with Novell (known as an MLA) is
expiring at the beginning of May. The agreement will not be renewed
because Novell has discontinued this type of purchasing agreement.
Orders for Novell software will no longer be handled by Software
Distribution in Workstation Support Services. Orders for Novell
software will now be handled by the campus departments that need
these products.
According to our Novell sales representative, departments will have
two discount options for purchasing Novell licenses and maintenance.
One is a VLA, or Volume License Agreement for Education. The other
is an ALA, or Academic License Agreement. Departments should consult
with Novell representative to determine which agreement would be the
better fit for a department's intended scope of usage.
I have not yet received clear information from Novell about how the
actual contracts must be handled. Specifically, I don't know if all
campus departments can operate under a single contract or if a
separate contract must be signed for each participating department.
At the moment, my assumption is that each department will need to
have a separate contract processed through the campus Business
Contracts office.
I do not have information from Novell about how whether maintenance
for pre-existing licenses can be purchased under a VLA or ALA.
Interested departments should address this question to the Novell
representative.
The contact for the VLA and ALA programs is:
