Last Friday I sent out statistics on percent of successful
connections. This was overly optimistic, as those whose hosts succeed
have been connecting more often than those who fail to connect.

I wrote a script to analyze problems with connections from AT&T cable
modems to UCLink. People with these modems may be able to send mail,
but not use Eudora or other clients to read mail.

Here is an analysis of the POP log for all hosts of the form:
  *.client.attbi.com

Dec11: Connected ok: 0 of 55350 ( 0%), hosts: 0 of 1478 ( 0%)
Dec12: Connected ok: 0 of 91086 ( 0%), hosts: 0 of 1708 ( 0%)
Dec13: Connected ok: 13361 of 78279 (17%), hosts: 138 of 1681 ( 8%)
Dec14: Connected ok: 62708 of 82244 (76%), hosts: 419 of 1711 (24%)
Dec15: Connected ok: 76842 of 83346 (92%), hosts: 534 of 1458 (36%)
Dec16: Connected ok: 77708 of 83455 (93%), hosts: 599 of 1416 (42%)
Dec17: Connected ok: 40798 of 44363 (91%), hosts: 513 of 1065 (48%)
(Dec 17 through about 1 p.m.)

So although the percentage of successful connections is high,
less than half of the hosts which tried to connect succeeded.

If you can't connect to read mail, use our web interface at:
        http://bearmail.berkeley.edu
and also complain to AT&T.
