Roy,
There's a bit more to implementing an AD than what Scott mentions. DNS
integration for one. The campus is working on a pilot AD forest which
will be integrated with the campus BIND-based DNS and CalNet MIT-based
Kerberos infrastructures. You can find more info about this, including a
project timeline at this location:
We will soon be publishing a BCC article and asking to get on the
Micronet agenda for a future meeting, perhaps in January.
Please feel free to contact the project contact address
(mailto:calnet-planning@uclink.berkeley.edu) if you have more questions
or would like to participate in the Planning Group itself.

OTOH, there are some major considerations in an upgrade to Win2K. It
requires more system resources (500 MHz CPU, 256MB ram, 2 GB hard disk
for a
decent system). If you plan on deploying Active Directory, you need to
do a
fair bit of upfront planning, especially in terms of deciding what, if
anything, you want to retain from your current domain structure. There
are
some new group types to consider, and the administration of rights
through
policy templates can be complex and confusing.
