Hi Ted,
Please excuse my advice if it is too basic or off the mark. Did the home
user check their browser settings? All the check boxes on the LAN settings
page (Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections) should be
unchecked according to the AT&T instructions. I reviewed the settings from
the auto configuration and found that the network settings were identical
to my manual settings. However, my browser LAN settings were not changed
by the auto configuration; the box to "Automatically detect settings" was
still checked.

I successfully switched over last night after 30 minutes of mucking
about. I have a Win98 PII and use IE5.5. I used their automatic
configuration software first, with no immediate success. I restored my old
settings, returned to the AT&T site, and used the manual configuration
instructions, with no immediate success. In both instances, I received
brief DHCP error messages after launching the browser. I called their help
line only to hear pre-recorded messages that were no help. I never reached
a tech and was never given the opportunity to talk to a live person. I
finally gave up in frustration and started to use MS Word. After 10-15
minutes, my cable modem gave a chime and indicated that I had a good cable
connection. I was able to connect immediately to both the Internet and my
email account. The download speed seemed better, but that may be due to
the lack of current users.

Hope this proves useful. Good luck to your home user.

Nick
