This is not a direct response to Debra - but I have not seen this point
addressed yet, so here goes:

I would personally rather have the ability to opt *in* to applications
like this. In general, I don't think that 'opt out' is a reasonable
model for anything involving personal information, especially financial
information. My bank's model for online banking is 'opt in'; I had to
call them and authenticate myself, and also send in forms requesting to
have my financial information made available online.

I don't know if it's that big a deal in this particular case (speaking
pragmatically, not from principles), but it's a disturbing trend. Will
I be able to change my health provider online without opting in? Change
where my monthly paycheck is direct deposited? Change my beneficiary?
And so on.

I think the university should generally adopt an 'opt in' strategy to
making personal information available online. I don't think that having
a CalNet ID or being a university employee should constitute opting in.

Does anyone know if this has been addressed on a systemwide (university
or preferably UCOP) level?
