Colleagues,
After a thorough national search, I am pleased to announce
that Craig Lant, from LBL, has accepted the position of UC
Berkeley campus information security officer. Craig
will start in this new position on September 11.
I would like to thank all of you who attended the candidates'
seminars and provided me with feedback. In addition, I
would like to acknowledge the excellent job that the
screening committee did in this search process.
As part of our efforts to improve our ability to respond
to security incidents, we have been compiling a list
of key contacts for each department. Early in the
summer John Broughton distributed a memo
requesting that every department name a security
contact. We have received many responses, but the
list is not yet complete. If you have not yet responded
to this request, would you please take a few minutes
and provide us with the contact information requested
in John's earlier email. A copy of his request is
included below.
--------------
IST would like to get the following SIX items of information to set up a
point of contact for your department. You can provide these by
(a) sending an e-mail to security@berkeley.edu.
(b) inserting the requested information for the following six items:
(1) Name of department(s):
[In some cases, one security contact may be set up for multiple
departments. If you want to do this, please list all departments.]
(2) (If applicable) Common domain name of computers in the department:
[Some departments have domain names (for example, the College of Chemistry
uses CChem) that appear in many, most, or all computer names. It is very
helpful for IST to know this. If your department doesn't have such a
naming convention, leave this item blank.]
(3) E-mail point of contact:
[Ideally, the e-mail point of contact will NOT be a person or persons,
although that is acceptable. It is preferred that a point of contact be
something with "sec" or security" in its name. Here are examples for a
hypothetical Department of Andthology:
-- security@andthology.berkeley.edu,
-- security-andthology@logic.berkeley.edu
-- sec-andthology@logic.berkeley.edu
Mail sent to such an address should automatically go to at least two people
in the department. This can be done, among other ways, by using a Unix
reflector or by setting up a small mailing list (see
http://www-uclink.berkeley.edu/major/major.create.html on how to create a
mailing list on UCLink; note that such a mailing list name can be longer
than the standard uclink e-mail address).]
(4) [Optional] Any additional information about this point of contact
(for example, alternate individual e-mail addresses and names):
(5) Subnet number(s) for the department(s):
[If you don't know your departmental subnet number(s), please provide a
full IP address for ONE computer in your department(s), and the approximate
number of computers in the department(s).]
(6) Building(s) where computers are located:
Please note that the security@berkeley.edu e-mail address that this
information should be sent to is also used to REPORT security-related
problems for which assistance may be needed.
