Re: Fwd: [ITS] [Fwd: CONEXIS - not MAC Frendly]

If the majority of their customers have been universities then clearly this would be perplexing.  But I'd guess that they've primarily serviced for-profit, commercial companies, where Windows is by far the norm, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if CONEXIS is using all Windows based stuff for developing their web.  For example, the main page is, you guessed it: default.asp.

It's not like something gets "overlooked" when this happens. Web
developers don't have to do anything special to make sites Mac
compatible. It's not like "Oops, we forgot to make our site Mac
compatible." It's the other way around - a deliberate decision on the
part of web developers and their bosses to use non-standard, Windows-
only technologies on the open web. It's never been a good idea, but is
also a pretty archaic practice at this point.

It's appalling to hear of this kind of thing still happening in 2009.

Thanks for forwarding that to the list. While I sympathize with the
problems of getting a new system up and running, I just can't agree
that having a major system for campus employees like this unavailable
to Mac users is a "kink". I don't know how that could not be noticed
in the specification process.

Please post/forward/distribute to faculty and staff in your
department.

We are aware of the issue MAC users are experiencing – that the
CONEXIS website is not currently compatible with most MAC browsers
and does not allow access to anyone using an internet browser other
than Internet Explorer.

Please note – _you do not have to register in order to use your FSA
card _or get your account and other information. Registering online
allows you access to your account information online. But, you can
also get all of the same information by calling CONEXIS Customer
Service and speaking to a Customer Service Representative.

Office of the President and CONEXIS are actively working on
resolving the browser access issue and are looking into what can be
done to open the CONEXIS site to more browsers. They hope to have
this resolved in the next week or so.

In the meantime, here are options available to MAC, as well as any
other, users:

1. You can call CONEXIS at 1-800-482-4120. The automated phone
system with your account information is available 24/7 and
representatives are available from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT. to
assist you. You will need your account or Social Security number to
access this information. Your account number is on your CONEXIS
welcome letter. My letter is dated 12/18/08.

2. While locations and hours are somewhat limited during the Winter
break, you can use a PC in one of the campus computer labs. For
locations and times: http://facility.berkeley.edu/labs/hours.html

3. You can come to the HR Benefits Unit, located at 2150 Shattuck
Ave., Suite 750 (the old Power Bar building above Washington Mutual
at the corner of Center St. and Shattuck Ave.) and either

a. Drop in between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and use a PC located here
or

b. _By appointment only_: call Amanda at 642-7053 to make an
appointment to come to the HR Benefits Unit and she will assist you
in registering your account online.

We will keep you updated on this situation. As with anything new,
there are always kinks to be worked out.

THANK YOU for your patience!!!

Marie Johnson
