In the Apple Discussions thread, several posters noted success by
downloading and running the Combo installer, rather than performing
the update via Software Update. The Combo installer is available at:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10-5-6_Combo_Update
(Looks like Greg Merritt also confirmed this just now.)
