If I try

1)Connect to Server dialog, enter the IP address, and click on the
Connect button, or

2) double-clicking on aliases made on another Mac where they work and
copied over, or

2)afp://{IP address of Xserve} in a Safari browser

. . . then I always get the same line appearing in the Console:

{Date/time} - Finder[328] CFlog(22) Cannot find factory {long hex string
here, always the same string}
