Rob,

The startup fails because there are enough significant hardware
differences between the two iMacs that the boot section of the install
disks were changed to reflect the new hardware. So, the newer disks are
looking for specific hardward in the post to enable booting. When it does
not find it, it fails. You will have to either find the original disks or
an OS X install disk whose version is before the newer machine.
