Trouble with Migration assistant...

I am having problems migrating data and user info from an older 17"
powerbook running OS X 3.4.1 to a new Intel Macbookpro running Leopard.
The problem is this... when I try to use the migration assistant in
Leopard on the new computer to move stuff from the old computer using a
firewire cable and transfer mode it give me an error that it can't find
any version of OS X on the old computer.
