Hi Micronetters,

When I did a poll of IT staff in our department, I found that most did
not know about the upcoming changes in IT job classifications (called
Career Compass) and that the comment period on IT will end soon - the
comment period is 5/14/07 - 6/21/07 (
http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/jobstandards/mappingtool.html) . The
next information session is June 20, 2007, 10:30 - 12:00 pm at the Tang
Center ( http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/newsevents/events.html) .
Since all positions on campus will eventually be mapped, I wanted to
remind everyone about these information sessions and about the upcoming
workshops.

IT is among the first groups to be mapped under Career Compass. I have
listed below links to the information and feedback pages to HR as well
as the email Shel Waggener sent to Micronet on May 17 about Career
Compass. I contacted Karen Berardi who is working on IT job
classifications for HR. She said that there are workshops planned (not
yet scheduled) for August to help staff map their positions. She also
said that she could come and speak at the August Micronet meeting if
there is enough interest.

_Email sent on 5/21/7 from HR:
_/Human Resources has launched a new web site,
http://careercompass.berkeley.edu, to inform the campus about Career
Compass and to communicate detailed information about the new job
classification structure being implemented for staff.

Career Compass is a series of initiatives focused on creating new job
standards, improving performance management, and providing greater
career development opportunities for staff. These initiatives are
sponsored by the Staff Infrastructure Steering Committee (SISC) and are
the product of several years of work across the campus. Career Compass
offers far-reaching benefits for Berkeley:

-- It will save time by providing standardized job descriptions for use
in recruitment and classification. Classification levels will be
clearly defined and widely published, demystifying classifications for
the campus and external applicants.

-- Staff job titles and salary ranges will be more closely aligned to
the external job market, improving recruitment timelines and outcomes.

-- Job expectations will be more consistent across campus, and more
clearly connected to performance reviews and development
opportunities.

-- Staff career progression and career development opportunities will be
enhanced.

**New Job Classification Structure Rolls Out, 30-Day Comment Period Per
Job Field**
This month, Human Resources will begin to publish detailed information
about the new job classification structure for staff. The new job
structure is a key component of Career Compass, developed over a period
of five years in collaboration with campus managers and staff
experts in each subject area.

Descriptions of jobs in the Finance and Information Technology fields
are available at the Career Compass web site. Staff members who serve in
these roles, and the managers who supervise them, are encouraged to
review this information and provide comments by June 15, 2007.
Information on other job fields will be available in the near future,
and there will be a 30-day comment period for each field. Managers
and staff should send comments to compdesk_at_berkeley.edu.

**Job Mapping Process**
Following the 30-day comment period for each field, after the Career
Compass team reviews the comments received and makes any appropriate
changes, managers will review information on the new job fields and
identify the appropriate job description for the positions that report
to them. This process is known as "job mapping." The job mapping
process for positions covered by Personnel Policies for Staff Members
(PPSM) is expected to continue through the end of 2007. Mapping work
for represented positions will begin in 2008 including bargaining
related to the impact of the changes. Salaries will not change as a
result of the mapping; new salary ranges will be introduced in mid-2008
to guide future pay decisions.

Academic, senior management and student positions are outside the scope
of this project.

For more information about the job mapping process, visit the Career
Compass web site.

**Communications Plan**
As the process moves forward over the next several months, Human
Resources will communicate additional information through the
Department Human Resources Managers, via the Career Compass web site,
and in open information sessions. Details about information sessions
are available in the "News and Events" section of the web site at
http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/newsevents/events.html.

We welcome your comments on this key human resources initiative.

(Note to managers and supervisors: please print a copy of this Campus
Memo to share with staff who may not have email accounts or access to
computers.)
