Everyone,
Here is a new message from CalMail:
Three years ago, in order to provide antivirus software for CalMail,
IST purchased a limited site-license of the Sophos antivirus product,
MailMonitor -- including the additional components of Enterprise
Manager, EM Reporter, SAV Admin, and SAV Interface. The renewal cost
for an additional three years is now cost-prohibitive and we have
decided not to renew the subscription.
While we believe that no other campus users are making use of our
limited site-license, if you are using Sophos MailMonitor or any of
the above mentioned Sophos components, please contact Paul Fisher
<pnfisher@berkeley.edu> by October 13. Our limited site-license is
expiring at the end of the month, and we will need to make
arrangements if there are any campus users making use of the same
license.
CalMail is now using Clam AntiVirus with great success. We initially
layered it with the Sophos product where ClamAV was the first layer.
Our experience has shown that ClamAV was catching the vast majority
of malware with a very small number getting through to Sophos, and we
have subsequently ceased using Sophos AV. ClamAV has the additional
benefit of catching phishes.
The CalMail team is also proposing to host a ClamAV mirror to give
back to the ClamAV community and provide a fast and local repository
for ClamAV updates to the UCB campus. This proposal will still need
to be approved by the Messaging Steering committee and IST directors
but all indications are in support of this endeavor.
