Hi All--
Anyone have any experience using non-apple drives in an G5 Xserve?
Maybe a source for Apple Sleds?

Any comments/thoughts would be welcome.

Background:

We have a G5 Xserve with 2 mirrored 80 gb drives and the database
that is on this machine is growing quickly. We need upgrade the
storage on the Xserve that has 3 drive bays. So I need to purchase a
third "sled" and will reuse one of the 80gb sled for the new drive.

Apple is charging $584 for a SATA 500gb drive (MA207G/A) and I can
purchase a Western Digital RE2 WD5000YS 500gb from newegg.com for
$199.99.

I understand that Apple burns in the drive and guarantee's that they
will work and that they will be covered under our extended Apple care.

I also know that I will need to purchase a "smart" sled from Apple
with an 80GB drive for $179 (M9449G/A)

R
