CommuniGate Pro (CGPro), the email server application that CalMail
currently uses, is being phased out and replaced with Cyrus. Cyrus
is open source, actively developed, and used by a wide community
including many institutions of higher education. Our new Cyrus
implementation has been designed to meet the growing performance and
scalability requirements of the CalMail system. CalMail users should
notice a performance improvement over the current CGPro environment,
as well as new IMAP enhancements including server side sorting and
threading.
We will be gradually migrating all CalMail accounts from CGPro to
Cyrus during October and November. While this process will be
transparent for most users, there will be a few changes that you and
your users should be aware of.
POP users with the "Leave Mail on Server" option set will receive
duplicates of already downloaded messages the first time they access
their account after it has been migrated. The migration will cause
POP clients to consider all messages stored in an Inbox to be new
again since they will be connecting to Cyrus instead of CGPro. We
will be sending a separate notice to the largest CalMail POP accounts
that we believe are using "Leave Mail on Server".
NOTE: For campus systems administrators, if your users are using POP
with "Leave Mail on Server", you might want to turn off the option,
reduce the time left on the server to 7 days, or switch them to IMAP.
Server side mail filters, which are currently run within CGPro, will
now be handled by Cyrus using Sieve, the Internet Proposed Standard
Protocol for mail filtering. The change to Sieve will simplify
server side mail filtering for CalMail users and allow us to provide
a new, more friendly web interface for modifying filters. However, a
small number of filters on the current CalMail system cannot be
automatically converted to Sieve. We will be contacting users with
these filters individually.
