rosetta -- not working?

We're setting up the first Intel Mac (a 20" iMac) that's come through
our office.

I started merrily going through installers -- Office, FileMaker,
Eudora all kinds of things -- and I find that NONE of the ppc apps
(including aforementioned Office, FM, Eudora, etc.) launch. I get a
quick bounce in the dock, then they disappear.

I've tried hitting get info and looking for an "open with rosetta"
checkbox, but there doesn't seem to be such a checkbox.

I think I'm pretty clearly missing something quite basic about
rosetta. Can anyone offer me a clue?
