Panther/Tiger Bootup

Hi,

I have an iMac that came installed with Tiger so I was going to make a
backup of it onto a firewire drive that I have partitioned. When I went
to boot off a partition that had Panther installed, it booted, but the
resolution was smaller (800x600) instead of the normal 1280x1024. The
window was also black & white and pretty fuzzy, but you could still
recognize the login window icons.

I then made the startup disk the Panther Partition off my firewire drive
and the resolution again was 800x600, but at least the image was in color
and clear.

I know that you can't install an older OS from what the hardware shipped
with, but has anybody seen a problem similar to this??

Thanks,
