As a starting place, under Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther"), you can
directly configure properties for the machine's Ethernet connection:
1. From the Apple menu, open "System Preferences ..."
2. In the "Show:" menu for your current network location, select
"Built-in Ethernet".
3. Click the "Ethernet" tab.
4. From the "Configure" pop-up menu, select "Manually (Advanced)".
Settings you can select there include your choice of 10, 100, or
1000Base-T protocols; duplex settings; and packet-related settings
(e.g. MTU).
Some third-party 'system tweaking' utilities, including some of the
multipurpose maintenance utilities identified at
<http://www.applelinks.com/p5/index.php/more/mac_os_x_system_maintenance_utilities_roundup/>,
may allow even more detailed configuration, or may offer
pre-configured profiles intended to optimize network performance.
I understand, though, that your question is somewhat different from
this - you're seeking to identify characteristics of the machine's
*actual* Ethernet connection ... and I don't currently know the
answer to that one. Perhaps someone else on the MAGNet list might
know.
