appt reminder software

Help, I've missed another appointment.

I need some very simple software that will remind me with a beep or a
popup or something, about a half-hour before an appointment, that I'm
due somewhere.

I'm not interested in "calendaring" software where I have to start
entering my life into a computer interface -- that has never worked,
and I've got an abandoned Palm Pilot to prove it. I only want
something where I can enter key events that I typically forget
because they are NOT connected with my mind-consuming work life.

It must proactively get in front of my face and not depend on me to call it up.

I'm on OS X 10.3.5. Surely there's something built into the
utilities (couldn't find it), or some easy freeware somewhere out
there??

Thanks for any help you can give this appointment-challenged person.
