   Yes, you can. Here's an admirably clear write-up from another
university on how to do this under Windows:

   If you wish to prevent this from happening again by excluding
certain directories from being scanned via Symantec AntiVirus's "file
system realtime protection" (akin to Norton AutoProtect in Norton
AntiVirus for Macintosh), please see the detailed notes in the
