The following AppleCare Knowledge Base article describes the
differences between the two major ways of identifying and connecting
to file servers in Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther"):
"About network browsing and connected servers in Mac OS X 10.3"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107804
This article doesn't specifically identify why one method allows
successful logins for your user and the other does not, but perhaps
it might nonetheless prove helpful.
One possibility comes to mind: connections to AppleShare file
servers initiated via the Finder's "Connect to Server" option
typically use AFP (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) URLs, such as
"afp://server-hostname-or-ip-address-here". Your user might try
entering a URL in that format, if they haven't already done so.
