Folks,
Thanks for your replies. I found out what the problem is. Someone
had "taken" the IP address of the computer. It's been assigned
another IP address and now has internet/network access.
I also learned that you can try to print from the same computer even
though you use another IP address for the printer but if the computer
network IP address is having a problem the printer will not connect
to the network. Even with a correct printer IP address. The
computer apparently gets confused.
As for the scanner problem I will try out the suggestions people sent.

Folks,
By default, I've become the system administrator for two Mac G4
computers in a Chemistry lab.
I have a Mac G4 that is running OS 10.2.6 and comes up with an error
message "the specified server could not be found" when I click on
Internet Explorer or Netscape. I rebooted the computer and called
the Campus Network Trouble reporting help desk. They could ping to
the computer.
Two other things, we plugged a scanner into the computer and the
computer could not recognize the scanner and I tried to print a
document to a network printer (with a different IP address) and the
printer could not be recognized.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about fixing this
problem? Thank you.
