Web-PDF form scripting?

Hi folks,

I'm trying to script web-database content into PDF forms that
students could download - Acrobat 6 might work (???), PDFLib in PHP
works, but means redoing existing forms, FDFmerge seems a little
pricey.

Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive way to merge web-db data
into an existing PDF form?
