In brief testing with Eudora 5.2.1, I have not been able to receive
or send mail via an encrypted connection under Mac OS X 10.3
("Panther"), either via SSL (alternate port) or STARTTLS, even after
applying QUALCOMM's suggested workaround of installing a
VeriSign-provided certificate in Panther's Keychain.
As a visible symptom of problems, under Eudora version 5.2.1, the
"Check Certificate" dialog appears repeatedly whenever attempting to
receive or send mail.
At least until we have any contrary information, we'll be
recommending only Eudora version 6.0 or higher for setting up SSL/TLS
encrypted connections to CalMail. I'd definitely be interested in
others' experiences with this ...

Version 6.0.2 includes a minor fix where the application now
reports an error if it is unable to add a certificate to the
Keychain. However, this minor update doesn't appear to resolve the
underlying problem, where Eudora is unable to add an initial
certificate to the Mac OS X 10.3 Keychain if no other certificate is
already present:
