I've been using a refurbished Epson 1660 Photo ($79) at home for
several months (its successor, the 1670, just came out at the same
retail price point, $129). It is supported out-of-the-box by Apple's
Image Capture application (Jaguar and Panther), so I haven't even
bothered with the software that came with the scanner. The color
density is good, the 1600 dpi resolution is not a limitation for
everyday use (especially when I usually scan between 300-600 dpi
anyway). I haven't really tested the USB 2 speed compared to USB 1.
I recommend the 1660 for its ease of use and scan quality for its price
point.
