The following AppleCare Knowledge Base document generally describes
what defragmenting a hard disk does:
"Macintosh: About Defragmenting Your Computer's Hard Disk"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=17933
There are several Mac OS X compatible third-party utilities which
are capable of defragmenting a volume and (potentially) optimizing
the positioning of files and free space to further enhance disk
performance. The ones I know of (listed alphabetically by vendor) are:
- Alsoft's PlusOptimizer, a standalone utility that was also
previously bundled with DiskWarrior 2.1.x and earlier
(Alsoft also claims to be working on a new Mac OS X-compatible
version of DiskExpress Pro, a sophisticated optimization utility)
- Micromat's Drive 10
- Symantec's Norton Utilities for Macintosh, which includes
Norton SpeedDisk
There may well be other products available. Apple's Macintosh Products
Guide is a great first place to look for finding these, as well as other
Mac OS software and hardware products:
I'm not aware of any no-cost products for this task, and none of the
products above are directly supported by the UC Berkeley campus.
