It might be possible that what your server admin meant is that you
need to use a protocol called SFTP (a secure FTP-like protocol based
on SSH) to upload files to your website on that server.

If so, there are several freeware and shareware SFTP clients for
Mac OS X that can permit you to do so. Among these are Fugu
(freeware), Transmit (shareware), Interarchie (shareware), and
MacSFTP (shareware). Fetch (free to educational users) may also
support SFTP by mid-year.

There are also other ways of exchanging files, some of which can be
encrypted via a technique called "SSH tunnelling," in which your file
exchange transactions can essentially be wrapped inside of an SSH
session. As Arthur Ogus noted, this is less likely to be what your
server admin meant.
