Paul,
In case you're not aware of the campus policies regarding User
Installed Networking Equipment, I'd like to offer the URL as a
resource. Depending on your needs and your environment, you may
find that your newly acquired Asante gear may not be approrpriate
or even allowable.
http://www.net.berkeley.edu/policy_review/user_installed_netequip.html
Judging by the message-ID from your posting to MAGNet, your IP
address appears to belong to a network that is not fully switched.
(128.32.57.128/25) If your network is, indeed, a fully switched
network, your that is the case, installation of this equipment may
be allowable, and additional IP addresses may be allocated to the
single jack serving your Asante node, Mac, and printer.
As far as AppleTalk is concerned, please note that campuswide
AppleTalk routing is going away. While AppleTalk will still be
functional withIN a given subnet, AT zones will not appear and
cross subnet AT routing will not be possible once the AppleTalk
abatement is complete. You may want to look at IP printing and
filesharing as alternatives.
More information on the AppleTalk and IPX abatement project is
available at:
