From: MAGNet mailing list administrator (owner-magnet-list@uclink4.berkeley.edu)
Date: Tue Oct 29 2002 - 12:38:26 PST
As of noon today, October 29, 2002, posting to the MAGNet list has been significantly restricted. Only e-mail messages which are (at least ostensibly) sent from subscribers' addresses will automatically posted to the list. Postings from non-subscribers will be 'bounced' to the list administrator.
While this change should go a long way towards keeping 'spam' messages from reaching the list, it also will necessarily impose some inconveniences:
- If you post to the list from an address that isn't identical
to the one from which you're currently subscribed to the list,
your message will be 'bounced': it will not reach the MAGNet list.
For instance, if you subscribed to the MAGNet list from
"myname@cchem.berkeley.edu", but happen to send messages
to that list from your alternate addresses,
"myname@uclink.berkeley.edu" and "myname@myisp.com",
the latter messages will be bounced.
Furthermore, from what we've seen to date, you will not receive
any indication that this has occurred, other than not seeing
your message show up on the MAGNet list.
(This has special implications for UCLink users, as well,
because your sending address must exactly match your
subscription address. If you are subscribed to the MAGNet
list from "myname@uclink.berkeley.edu" and send a message
to that list from "myname@uclink4.berkeley.edu", for
instance, that message will also be bounced.)
- Some non-subscribers who may post to the list at the suggestion
of campus computing support services will also have their messages
silently bounced.
We'll be notifying representatives of several of these services
to let them know about this change.
What will happen to 'bounced' messages?
---------------------------------------
Until stated otherwise, every 'bounced' message will be scanned by the list administrator. Messages which appear to be from legitimate subscribers or otherwise are appropriate for posting will be redirected to the list.
In addition, subscribers who have posted a message from an 'alternate' address and had it 'bounce' will be given the opportunity to grant that address the privilege of posting (only) to the MAGNet list. (If you wish, you can also specifically request, in advance, that one or more of your alternate addresses be authorized to post.)
Note that, because of the list administrator's workload and occasional absences, 'bounced' messages may sometimes be delayed from being posted to the MAGNet list. Most delays should be no longer than one to two business days, but there may be periods where such messages are delayed significantly longer.
Questions or requests?
----------------------
If you have any questions or requests regarding this change, please feel free to write me at the list administrator's address, <owner-magnet-list@listlink.berkeley.edu>.
