You may have noticed a recent upsurge in 'spam' (unsolicited
commercial e-mail) postings to the MAGNet user group mailing list.
In addition, other campus user groups which also continue to
operate 'open' mailing lists have also been plagued by spam. In
particular, this Saturday, October 26, the Micronet mailing list was
hit by a spate of 12 spam postings in rapid succession.
As a result, I've made the decision to "close" the MAGNet mailing
list this Tuesday, October 29, at 12:00 noon. After that time, only
messages sent to the MAGNet mailing list address by subscribers to
that list will be 'broadcast' to the list's members. Messages sent
to the list address by non-subscribers will be blocked.
This may cause some inconvenience for list members and others, and
is a step not being taken lightly. I'll send a follow-up message on
or before Tuesday with more details about how the "closed" list will
work.
