[MAGNet] Office 98 type 2 errors

Hi:
I have a g-3 running 8.6 that started to produce type 2 errors with Word 98 and Powerpoint today.
It happens consistently whenever I try to do something to a new or old file
1. with extensions turned off
2. with word preferences trashed
3. with 3X more than minimum memory allocated to applications
4. with virtual memory off
5. whether the Word invoked is on the affected machine or
shared from another g-3 where it works fine

Other applications seem OK.

Can anyone suggest the next thing to try?
