MAGNet,

One of our professors is having trouble with his desktop G4 (original
model). Mac OS 9.04 was installed, but last week it was upgraded to
9.2. It seemed fine at first, but then he'd experience an
intermittent delay in the display of characters when typing in
applications such as MS Word and Excel, or Eudora. The delay would
sometimes last as long as 1-2 seconds, and the effect is like typing
on some typewriters, where the key strokes on the keyboard do not
result instantaneously with the appearance of the characters on the
page. In effect, he completes the typing of a word on the keyboard
and then sees the letters quickly display in fast sequence (not
simultaneously) 1-3 seconds after typing. It is quite distracting.
The other odd behavior is the inability to restart the computer
without long delays, about 20-30 seconds after closing all
applications. After restart, the typing delay behavior disappears,
at least for a while.

We have tried to identify the circumstances in which the problem
occurs, but so far nothing has proven to be definitive. One
suspicion is the sleep mode, as in at least two instances the typing
delay occurred after the computer was asleep.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem?

Thanks.

John
