        It should be relatively straightforward to use ssh with the
'-R' flag to set up the ssh tunnel from the command line, so that an
ftp connection to localhost would get forwarded to socrates. Type
'man ssh' in a terminal window for more details.

        I don't know if there are any other peculiarities that would
prevent this with your particular arrangement, but this generally
works quite well.
