Dear Current and Potential Mac Users,

You can now purchase licenses and media for Mac OS X -
Apple's newest operating system for Macintosh computers, based on
Unix underpinnings - at a significant discount through Software
Distribution.

The individual licenses cost $38 and the individual media
packages cost $8. Each media package includes three CD-ROMs:

   - Mac OS X 10.0
(which you can upgrade to version 10.0.4 via a free download)
   - Mac OS 9.1
(a full installer for the previous version of the Mac OS, required
to run most current Mac OS programs under Mac OS X)
   - Developer Tools for Mac OS X
(with a free upgrade also available online)

You can purchase more then one license on a
first-come-first-served basis but we ask that those users buying
multiple licenses only buy one media package for every three
licenses. This is to ensure that we have enough CD's for all users
since we only have a limited supply.

These discounted licenses allow you to install any free Mac
OS X updates that Apple may release. However, they cannot be used to
obtain discounts on any future upgrades for which Apple will charge a
fee. (Specifically, these licenses will be eligible for Apple's Mac
OS X 10.1 update, due in September 2001, if Apple offers that update
for downloading without charging a fee.)

Mac OS X will run on nearly all Macintosh computers based on
G3 or G4 processors. See <http://www.info.apple.com/usen/macosx/>
for detailed system requirements.

As noted in a recent Berkeley Computing and Communications
article
<http://istpub.berkeley.edu:4201/bcc/Spring2001/mic.osx.html>, Mac OS
X is still very new, and represents a radical departure from earlier
versions of this operating system. At this time, it is most
appropriate for installation and use by Macintosh support providers,
system administrators, and advanced early adopters.

You can find the registration form at for Max OS X our
website: http://softdist.berkeley.edu:591/MacOSX/default.htm. Fill
out the necessary information and either fax the form to us
(643-5385) or drop it off at our office (238 Evans).
