A list of which versions of Apple's Universal Serial Bus (USB)
support software were bundled with, or were available for, specific
Macintosh models running various versions of the Mac OS, can be found at:
http://developer.apple.com/hardware/usb/versionusb.htm
Another useful guide (although not as comprehensive as the above) is:
http://www.palomar.com/Printing/USBVersions.html
A Mac running Mac OS 8.1 (not 8.0) with a third-party PCI bus
USB expansion card installed can use versions 1.0.1 or 1.1 of Apple's
support software for these cards (which Apple calls its "USB Adapter
Card Support" software.)
However, to the best of my knowledge, Apple provided versions
1.0.1 and 1.1 of this software only to licensed third-party USB device
vendors for bundling with their products, as well as to developers
through Apple's USB driver development kits (DDKs). I don't recall these
versions ever being made available directly from Apple for downloading
by end users. Apple now seems to offer only version 1.4.1 of this
software for downloading via its new Knowledge Base.
If you still must run Mac OS 8.1, your simplest option might be to
locate someone with the original Mac OS diskette or CD-ROM, if any,
that came with a third-party PCI Bus USB card purchased several years
ago, such as the diskette that came in the KeySpan USB Card package.
This will likely install version 1.0.1 or 1.1 of Apple's USB support
software.
Another possibility would be to upgrade to (at least) Mac OS 8.6,
then download and install the latest (1.4.1 or later) version of the
USB Adapter Card Support software.
