This is what I have found with setting up networked HP Laserprinters in
a University environments using TCPIP as the primary protocol in an
mixed environment (PC's, Mac's, Unix).

1.) Dedicated IP address for printer with name resolution set as printer
name if possible.

2.) Etalk enabled, printer configured with name derived from nslookup if
possible.

3.) Avoid using "-" in print queue names. This causes problems with
Solaris. For example, avoid using names like "hpw-1234". You should
use names like "hpw1234" instead.

4.) HP JetAdmin (not Web Jet Admin) installed on every PC with printer
queue and status for general users computers. Do not install
administrative priviledges for users.

5.) Latest HP PS driver installed on every PC and Mac.

6.) Lock the control panel on the printer after making your settings.
User's will often change the printer settings on the printer themselves
or via Jet Admin if given admin privledges.

The HP JetAdmin driver will allow Windows PCs to print directly to the
printer using the assigned name or IP address. This will allow users to
cross subnets. If you require a print queue, then of course this
method is not applicable. Also, if a bad print job is sent, one of the
problems is tracking down the offending machine.

Most printer problems occur when different printer drivers are installed
on the computers. To eliminate this problem, install only the latest HP
PS driver on the computers, especially those in mixed multi platform
environments. I avoid installing the PCL drivers so that this option is
not available to the user.

Hope this info helps.
