Paul,

Sorry about your advisor's logic board; though given the age of the
equipment, a failure at this point is not, well, not necessarily unexpected
or unheard of-- it happens.

Obviously fair market value of the 3400C is not worth $1500-- so replacing
the logic board with a new factory-shipped logic board from Apple can be
difficult to justify. A G3 logic board will not work you for numerous
reasons. For $1500 it would be cheaper to replace the 3400C altogether with
a new machine with a 3 year extended AppleCare warranty-- more power, more
storage, better screen, 10/100 Ethernet, wireless ready, OS X capable, etc.
New G4 PowerBooks start at $2339 while last year's PowerBook G3 sells for
$1799. If budget is an issue, perhaps and iBook?

If reviving the 3400c is the best option for your advisor, have you tried
eBay? Perhaps you can pick up a used 3400C and just swap out the hard
drive? I saw them selling on eBay for between $500 & $750. Note: if you
decide to buy a used machine, find out about the warranty, if any. I doubt
that any 3400 is still covered--even by an AppleCare extended warranty.
There'd be nothing worse than buying a replacement 3400 that fizzles out in
a couple months. Also, check with WHSG again about the replacement cost of
the logic board. I spoke with Dan Stone, WHSG's manager, about the cost of
the logic board and, off the top of his head, he thought that $1500 sounded
high.

For clarification-- there seems to be constant confusion between The
Scholar's Workstation (TSW) which SELLS Apple computers and The Workstation
Hardware Support Group which SUPPORTS Apple computers. In most cases the
place where you buy your computer is the same place where you take your
computer for warranty repair service; i.e., COMPUSA, CIRCUIT CITY,
COMPUTERWARE, M.A.C, all have an integrated sales department and service
department under one management. THIS IS NOT THE CASE AT U.C. BERKELEY.
Sales and Service are separate entities; though we are conveniently located
on the same basement floor of University Hall
<http://www.tsw.berkeley.edu/general/location.html>.

The Apple Authorized Campus Reseller is THE SCHOLAR'S WORKSTATION (TSW),
managed by April Roy under the direction of Jerome Smith, Director,
Workstation Support Services. <http://tsw.berkeley.edu>. For TSW's mission
visit <http://www.tsw.berkeley.edu/general/about_TSW.html>

The Apple Authorized Service Provider on campus is THE WORKSTATION HARDWARE
SUPPORT GROUP (WHSG), managed by Dan Stone under the direction of Jerome
Smith, Director, Workstation Support Services.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Best,

Kin
