A reminder: virus updates for Virex, the campus's site licensed
anti-virus utility for the Mac OS, continue to be released monthly.
These updates enable Virex to detect, block infection attempts by,
and remove newly-identified viruses. They consist of new virus
signatures and, occasionally, updates to the core virus engine.
The current Virex Virus Update is dated 2001-02-01. Virex's
vendor, Network Associates, Inc. (NAI), asserts that this update can
detect and remove two macro viruses -- variants of W97M/Marker and
W97M/Melissa@MM -- capable of being distributed in Microsoft Word 9.x
(Microsoft Office 2001) files. (These macro virus variants can also
still infect Word 97, 98, and 2000 files.)
There are three convenient ways to obtain Virex updates:
- Schedule automatic downloads.
You can configure the Virex application to automatically
download and install any available Virus updates at specific
intervals. For instance, you might configure Virex to check
for such updates at every startup, once a week, or once a month.
To do so:
1. In the Virex application, choose "Edit Schedule..." from
the "Schedule" menu.
2. Choose "eUpdate" from the top pop-up menu at the left (which
defaults to "Diagnose").
3. Choose your preferred schedule for updates from the bottom
pop-up menu. For instance, you might choose "At Specific Time",
from this menu, then use the calendar interface to the right of
this menu to schedule automatic downloads early in the morning
on the 2nd or 3rd of each month.
- Click a button within the Virex application.
By opening the Virex application, then clicking the "eUpdate"
button in the application's main window, Virex will check whether
a newer Virus Update is available. If it is, it will be
automatically downloaded and installed.
- Download and install the updates manually.
You can download the current Virus Update from the Virex home page
on the Berkeley Macintosh Support Web site, at:
http://mac.berkeley.edu/anti-virus/virex.html
After doing so, open the just-downloaded "Virus Definitions
YYYY-MM-DD" document (where "YYYY-MM-DD" reflects that document's
release date). This will launch the Virex application, which
will then offer to install the current set of virus definitions.
