The new system will not be limited to 8 characters, so you'll be able
to choose a longer name or alias if you wish.
For the BEEF Report, we considered automatic assignment of names, and
eventually had to discard the idea because of the problem resolving
conflicts. Probably not an issue for someone named Girlington, but
there are 18 "Jennifer Lee"s on campus.
