We met to brainstorm over our goals for the project. It turns out a lot
of our goals are contradictory, but that's OK, we'll work it out as we go
forward. We wanted to finish the ground work, so when Jacqueline Craig
joins the group next week, we can start making decisions. We want to
stress to Jacqueline that we feel her contribution is critical to our
ability to move forward.
Here's what we came up with for goals:
* Minimally, create something@Berkeley.EDU.
* Create an attractive name space that could be moved into the Online
Alumni Community (Tom)
* More specifically, create friendly@Berkeley.EDU (Gordon)
* Create an @Berkeley.EDU address for "everyone" (whatever that means)
* Universal equality (no preference given to faculty or staff in name choice)
* Run TrendMicro VirusWall (or similar) on server
* Allow users to write their own mail filters on server
* Support SMTP AUTH
* Comply with RFC's (support postmaster, abuse, other addresses)
* Keep it simple
* Coordinate with CalNet/LDAP, maybe share directory update form
The above all seemed fairly well agreed upon. There were two pairs of
directly conflicting goals:
* Create a clean, new namespace
* Don't create a new namespace
* Create a controlled namespace, without user choice
* Allow users to choose a friendly name
We'll have to make choices in those areas.
Our next meeting is Monday, December 3rd, at 11:00 in 261 Campbell Hall.
See you then.
