Through LSCR, the College provides free web hosting to all L&S departments and related units. Eligible departments are given two free accounts, each with 100MB of disk space, and have access to most of the popular web tools such as CGI, PHP, and MySQL.
Our server is a Dell running RedHat Enterprise Linux and Apache 2.2. It currently serves more than 20 departmental sites. Analog, a popular log file analyzer, provides a variety of statistics on your web site and its visitors.
Among the services we offer is name-based virtual hosting; you can give your
department a more attractive URL by using
http://<department_name>.berkeley.edu. There is no
additional charge for this service, and you can easily shift to your new URL with only minimal changes to the links on your site.
Many departments now feature dynamic database-driven web sites. LSCR is able to develop and host these sites using a combination of PHP and MySQL. PHP and MySQL are available as part of the default package of services. We are investigating Ruby on Rails support.
Our server does not provide any video streaming support, and our disk space constraints are such that hosting video is not recommended. We recommend that you host video on one of the public video hosting sites, or on webcast.berkeley.edu, and embed the videos in your web pages.
