Manually backing up your computer

We recently discovered that the backup software the campus uses to back up your computers is not performing its automatic function for nightly backup on Intel Macs. The backup software vendor needs to create a workable version for the Intel iMacs. We are working with the campus to try to expedite this.

In the meantime, however, to assure that your computers are being backed up you can perform a manual backup of your machine each night, or as often as you see fit. It's easy to do, will only take a minute of your time to open, and can be done in the background so as not to interfere with your work. As we wait for a workable release of the software from IBM, follow these steps to manually back up your computer:

Manually backing up your computer:

1. Do a "Find" on your computer for "TSM Backup for Administrators" and double-click on it
2. Type in your login and password that you use when you log into your machine
3. At the backup window, click on "Backup"
4. Click the down arrow next to "Local"
5. Put a checkmark in the box next to your computer name
6. Click "Backup" in the upper left corner of that window
7. When the message comes up "Backup completed" click ok
8. Click the red button to exit the "Detailed Status Report" window
9. Go to "TSM Backup" drop down menu in the upper left corner next to the
blue apple

While TSM is backing up your machine after step 6 above, you do not have to
wait for it to back up. You may continue working on other things while the
backup is taking place. If you want to hide the backup window in
progress, press cmd-h.
