Software Update

We have all enjoyed the benefits of using Macs without the constant hassle of
viruses. However, we should also be mindful that no one computer platform will
continuously be exempt from viruses. Mac OS X provides an automatic software
updater that downloads security patches and other updates that will help
protect your Mac and improve its performance. We will be configuring your
machine to run these automatic updates ONCE A WEEK.

Here is what you will see in three easy steps:

1. If there are updates or patches that are available to be installed on your
computer, a window will pop up saying:

"New software is available for your computer."

Click on the button that says Install # Items (# representing the number of
items it will install).

2. You will see another pop-up window that asks for your password. Put in the
password for your computer (not your email login but the login you use when you
log onto your computer.) You may see a window in which you should click on
"Agree."

You can continue working on whatever documents or projects you are in while the
download is happening in the background.

3. When the updates are finished loading you'll see a window that will say
"The new software requires that you restart your computer now."

You do not have to restart your computer at that very moment. You can move
that window to the side and resume working in your other applications.
However, in order for the updates to take effect your machine will need to be
restarted. You can do this at the end of the day, after you're finished
working on a document or project, or the next morning, whichever you prefer.

This will only happen once a week, and only if there are new updates that are
not currently on your computer.

We are testing another "behind the scenes" method of updating your machine,
where you will not have to see or be involved in the updates. Unfortunately we
have not completed testing that method yet. We do, however, want to put the
updates in place right away in keeping with the new guidelines for campus
security requirements.

Please let me know if you have any questions. As always, if anyone has any
problems with their updates, we will be there to help.
