About Mac OS

Mac OS 9.0, the last major version of the classic Macintosh operating system, was released in January 2000, following 8.6 in May 1999, 8.5.1 in January 1999, and earlier 8.0. Mac OS 9.0 introduced a number of long-awaited features such as multi-user support, file security, AppleScript, file sharing over TCP/IP, Sherlock 2 as well as greatly improved Internet integration (see also the campus-wide Mac OS page).

Mac OS 9.1 was released in January 2001 and was primarily designed to ease the transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X, most visibly by renaming the Applications folder to Applications (Mac OS 9) and may run alone or in Classic mode under Mac OS X.

Mac OS 9.2.1, released in August 2001, continues the effort of fine-tuning the Mac OS to run as smoothly as possible in Classic mode under Mac OS X as well as maintaining compability with newer computer hardware. The current version of Mac OS is 9.2.2, released on December 5, 2001.
